Estimate the tax on a Spanish estate, per heir, and see whether you need a Spanish will.
Everything passing on death: the property, accounts and anything else held in Spain.
Close family can leave most of its value out, up to a cap, if they keep it.
Each is taxed on their own share, so splitting an estate genuinely costs less than leaving it to one.
The single biggest factor, and the region sets it. Many rebate 95 to 99 per cent for spouses and children. If you do not know your region, try both ends of the range.
Tax for the family: €76
Per heir: €38
Share of the estate: 0.02%
€76 between them — €38 each.
Without the regional rebate it would be €7,552, which is the number to check if you are not certain of your region.
If you own anything in Spain, a Spanish will covering your Spanish assets saves your family months of translation, apostilles and legal certificates at exactly the moment they can least face it. It sits alongside your will at home rather than replacing it, and the clause worth having is the one electing the law of your own nationality to decide who inherits — because Spanish law reserves a large share for children whatever your will says.

Spanish inheritance tax works the opposite way round to the British one: the heir pays, not the estate, and each beneficiary is taxed on their own share at a rate that depends on how closely they were related. A spouse or child gets a reduction of €15,957 under the state rules and pays tax on the rest — there is no automatic exemption between husband and wife. Most regions have since rebated almost all of that away, which is why the region matters more than any other single fact, and why this calculator asks for it instead of guessing.
