Questions people ask

Which countries count towards the 90 days?

All of them, together. The Schengen area is one border for this purpose, so a fortnight in Spain, a week in France and a long weekend in Portugal are thirty-one days on the same counter. Ireland and Cyprus are outside it and do not count, and nor does any time spent in the United Kingdom.

Do the day I arrive and the day I leave both count?

Yes, in full, however short they are. A flight that lands at half past eleven at night uses a whole day, and so does one that leaves at six the next morning. It is the commonest reason somebody who thought they had two days spare turns out to have none.

What happens if I go over?

It is recorded against you at the border, and the consequences run from a warning to a fine and a re-entry ban depending on how far over you were and which country notices. Airlines increasingly check before boarding too, so an overstay can end a trip before it starts rather than at passport control.

Does a residence permit or a long-stay visa change this?

Completely — and that is the point at which this calculator stops applying to you. Time spent in the country that issued your residence permit or national long-stay visa does not use up the allowance at all, which is why people who keep running out of days end up applying for one.

Is my travel history stored anywhere?

Not by us: what you type stays in this browser and never reaches our servers. Officially the EU Entry/Exit System records entries and exits electronically, so the border keeps its own count of your days whether or not you keep one.
